2008 Plan of Work
Top Priority Goals
- Create a task force of business leaders interested in advocating for affordable housing policies and programs in Arlington and Northern Virginia.
- Educate faith communities about potential roles in meeting the affordable housing shortage, with at least two faith communities committed to actions on behalf of affordable housing.
- Build strong public support for policies ensuring that by the 2010 budget the County has allocated sufficient funds to meet its goal of adding 400 units of committed affordable housing a year. Note: Based on an assumed per unit cost of $75,000, the eventual goal is $30 million available annually for affordable housing development.
- Develop and implement a communications strategy designed to increase AHS visibility and effectiveness.
- Hold fully funded sixth annual Leckey Forum.
- Continue facilitation and advocacy efforts on behalf of affordable housing projects and policies. Potential projects/policies to be monitored include: the Ft. Myer sector plan, the Wilson school site, proposed housing authority, accessory dwelling unit ordinance, Buckingham III, Arlington Mill, and development of tract at Wilson Boulevard and Glebe Road.
- Develop and build support for policies that help keep market rate affordable rentals affordable.
Second Priority Goals
- Document cost of site plan process for affordable housing projects and develop recommendations to make the system more efficient while ensuring community input.
- Continue to support activities of the Northern Virginia Affordable Housing Alliance, including funding of the Virginia Housing Trust Fund.
- Secure funds for GMU economic impact study.
