Jay Fisette, a “tireless advocate for affordable housing across the commonwealth” received the 2018 Bozman Award on December 2.
The Fair Housing Act was passed fifty years ago, yet America’s neighborhoods remain deeply segregated along racial lines. Author Richard Rothstein argues that this divide is the direct result of government policies, some of which are relegated to the past and others that are still in place today.

In the spirit of the importance of affordable housing, we offered a training about the Arlington for Everyone campaign for this year’s MLK Day of Service on January 15th. The campaign is designed to spark a community dialogue about the importance of housing affordability and housing options for the future of Arlington.
On Sunday, December 3rd, 2017, the Alliance for Housing Solutions Ellen M. Bozman Affordable Housing Award celebration recognized three organizations whose commitment to affordable housing was demonstrated through collaboration in the preservation efforts in Westover.
The State of Affordable Housing Forum is an annual AHS event designed to engage the community in a discussion of a range of current events and the outlook for affordable housing in the coming year. This year's event subtitled “Federal Upheaval…Local Consequences” was held at the intersection of major federal decisions that could have lasting political impacts to the future of affordable housing finance and community economic development programs.

The 2015 Ellen M. Bozman Affordable Housing Award was shared by recipients who have helped build Foundations for affordable housing in Arlington, through policy and leadership or through financial support.
This special event, presented by AHS in cooperation with Columbia Pike Revitalization Organization (CPRO), took place during Affordable Housing Month, September 2015, at the Arlington Cinema & Drafthouse. (Link to the flyer).
Michelle Winters (Winters Community Strategies) moderated a panel that included Paul Browne, Wesley Housing Development Corporation and John Welsh, AHC, Inc. (each of whom presented a case study on a mixed-income development) and Edmund Delany, Capital One Bank, and Steve Cover, Arlington County, who provided banking and local policy perspectives. Long-time supporters of housing affordability tend to see what is usually called density through the lens of the affordable units that density can provide. Affordable units are important of course, but they are one among the many positive benefits of what are are increasingly called "Great Spaces." As a land use term, density usually refers to the number of units per a given piece of land, usually an acre. But in Arlington and the region, a smart growth orientation reaches beyond housing units to include transit access, walkable retail, green space, and other benefits.
Supporters of housing affordability need to be able to describe these positive aspects to a variety of audiences.

A panel discussion on Micro Units: The Future or Faux Fad? topped the bill at our 2013 State of Affordable Housing event. Micro units, a housing option taking hold in urban areas across the country, are accommodating the needs and fitting the budgets of millennials, downsizing seniors, and others who are willing to give up some living space in exchange for reduced rents in vital urban settings. Could they become part of the solution to providing greater housing affordability on our scarce real estate?
On December 7, 2014, AHS honored eleven Housing [S]heroes with the annual Ellen M. Bozman Affordable Housing Award, with 140 community leaders in attendance. The recipients of the award, many who could trace their activism over several decades, pushed back against the status quo to create conditions for the Arlington we know today. In honor of our [S]heroes’ service, AHS made a special donation to Doorways for Women and Families.
